Fabio Fognini reached the second round of the Miami Open on Wednesday with victory over Ryan Harrison, while Yaroslava Shvedova upset Jelena Jankovic.
Italy’s Fognini set up a second-round clash with Joao Sousa after defeating local favourite Harrison 6-4, 7-5.

Elsewhere in the men’s draw, Nicolas Mahut defeated Michael Mmoh 6-3, 6-2, while Frenchman Jeremy Chardy started his campaign with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Facundo Bagnis.
Other first-round winners included Yoshihito Nishioka, Benoit Paire and Donald Young.
Over in the women’s draw, Yaroslava Shvedova pulled off an upset 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7/3) victory over Jelena Jankovic – only her second win over Serbian in six meetings.

Patricia Maria Tig dismissed British No 1 Heather Watson 7-6 (7-4), 6-1, while American Bethanie Mattek-Sands advanced with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 victory over Katerina Siniakova.
There were also first-round wins for Jana Cepelova, Madison Brengle and Christina McHale.
