Goffin goes through, Isner goes out in Mexico

David Goffin beat Stéphane Robert and John Isner was defeated by Steve Johnson in the most notable results from the first round of action at the Mexican Open in Acapulco.

The Mexican Open often draws some of the biggest names in men’s tennis and this year is no different.

With ATP Tour 500 status, the likes of Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal are in Acapulco this week.

The highest seeds in action on Monday as the tournament kicked off were Goffin (5) and Isner (8) and both players enjoyed mixed fortunes.

Frenchman Robert was simply no match for Belgian star Goffin. Four breaks in total and complete dominance from the back of the court saw him run-out a 6-1, 6-2 victor.

Isner never had it so easy in an all American clash though.

Up against the tenacious and determined Johnson, Isner was never allowed to settle into any sort of rhythm.

At well over six-foot, Isner is considered one of the best servers in the game at the moment.

In both sets, Johnson was able to steal early breaks and then close-out. He beat his higher ranked opponent 6-4, 6-4.

On Tuesday, Djokovic and Nadal are lock horns with Martin Kli%u017Ean and Mischa Zverev respectively.
