Bellis’ dream run ended by Wozniacki

Teenager CiCi Bellis saw her dream run ended by Caroline Wozniacki at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships on Thursday.

The 17-year-old, who pulled off a huge upset win over Agnieszka Radwanska in the third round, came unstuck against the 2011 champion, going down 6-3, 6-2.

Bellis actually broke early for a 3-1 lead in the first set, but Wozniacki soon got the measure of her opponent's groundstrokes, forcing her into making an extra shot time and time again and drawing out several unforced errors.

Nevertheless, it was a big moment for Bellis, who got the opportunity to play against one of her childhood idols in the quarter-finals of a major competition.

"She's such a great player. It was really fun for me to see what the highest level is," Bellis said.

Wozniacki said: "I have been there myself, so I know what it's like. I just try to put myself in her shoes.

"For me, it was just very important to stay strong and not show any negative emotions but just stay positive all the time, show that I have the presence on court and really make her play those extra balls and points.

"She would really have to play on a really high level to beat me, because I was going to give that extra ball back. I wasn't going to just give it to her."

Wozniacki moves on to face Anastasija Sevastova in the semi-finals, after the Latvian beat China's Wang Qiang 6-4, 7-5.

Top seed Angelique Kerber was also in total control as she defeated Ana Konjuh 6-3, 6-2 in her last eight clash.

The German moves on to meet Elina Svitolina, who dispatched Lauren Davis 6-0, 6-4.
