Raonic stays on track at Delray Beach

Canadian top seed Milos Raonic defeated Borna Coric of Croatia to reach the quarter-final stage of the Delray Beach International, on a day where matches were delayed by rain.

In a match lasting one hour and 37 minutes the big-serving Raonic, who served 12 aces, was a straight-set winner over Coric, going through 6-3, 7-6(2) and will be up against eighth-seeded Kyle Edmund next.

In the opening set, things progressed until the sixth game when Raonic claimed his opponent's serve and went on to serve for the set, saving two break points in the process, to win the opener 6-3.

Both players dropped serve in the opening two games of the second set but thereafter things went with serve for the set and match to be decided on a tiebreaker which Raonic won 7-2 setting up the match point with his 12th ace of the day.

In an interview after his victory, Raonic said he was generally happy with how he played.

"He tried to be a bit more aggressive, I got that early break and I had a lop-sided game with a couple of doubles [faults], couple of mistakes, that I'd be disappointed with normally," Raonic said.

"If I can get myself ahead a break it's where my strength lies so I'm happy I managed to keep it together since then and managed to pull it out in two.

"It worked out well. I have 36 hours now to recover and that's what the focus is going to be on. I'll practise, I need practice."

In other matches, Britain's eighth seed Edmund beat Yen-Hsun Lu 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, serving nine aces with three breaks for the victory.

American's Jack Sock and Steve Johnson both won to set up a quarter-final meeting. Third-seeded Sock saw off Spain's Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-4, 6-1 while fifth-seeded Johnson defeated Japan's Yoshihito Nishioka by the identical score.
