Teenager stuns Radwanska in Dubai

Seventeen-year-old American CiCi Bellis secured the biggest win of her young career as she upset fourth seed Agnieszka Radwanska in the third round of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships.

Bellis gave notice of her talent by winning the Hawaii Tennis Open in November of last year, defeating  Zhang Shuai in the final, and the California native proved it was no fluke on Wednesday as she claimed the major scalp of World No 6 Radwanska to reach the quarter-finals of a WTA Premier event for the first time.

Bellis won 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 to set up a last eight meeting with Caroline Wozniacki.

Radwanska looked to have righted the ship after going a set down via a single break of serve by winning the second set convincingly, but Bellis hit back strongly in the decider.

After the players exchanged breaks to level the scores at 2-2, Bellis struck two decisive blows in the form of consecutive breaks to effectively kill off the contest and consign her opponent to a shock defeat.

"It's one of the best feelings in my life, for sure," Bellis said afterwards. "I'm really happy about the outcome tonight, and I work so hard for it. I think my work is paying off.

"I'm definitely playing some of my best tennis right now."

The only other upset on the day saw eighth seed Elena Vesnina go down 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) to Croatian Ana Konjuh.

Elsewhere, top seed Angelique Kerber was able to avenge her shock Olympic gold medal defeat to Puerto Rico's Monica Puig, winning 6-2, 6-3.

"I was really not thinking too much about our final in Rio, because it was a completely totally different match than today," she later said.

"Tonight it was a new match, new challenge for me. So I was focusing more on the day today than looking back to the last match."

China's Qiang Wang also advanced after beating much higher-ranked opponent Kristina Mladenovic 6-1, 6-4, while Elina Svitolina battled back from a set down to defeat Christina McHale 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.
