Nadal unavailable for Spain’s Davis Cup tie

Rafael Nadal will not be part of Spain’s Davis Cup team that faces Croatia in a first round tie after his Australian Open final five-set loss to Roger Federer this past weekend.

Spain Davis Cup captain Conchita Martinez confirmed that the 30-year-old Nadal would be unavailable to play this weekend in Osijek on an indoor hard-court due to him needing a break after a tough mental, physical and tiring Australian Open from the beginning to the end.

"Rafa's wear and tear in the last month was very significant," Martinez said. "He needs to recover from his recent efforts and certainly will be with us again in the next rounds."

Nadal will be replaced by Feliciano Lopez, who teams up with Roberto Bautista Agut, Pablo Carreno Busta and Marc Lopez. Bautista and Carreno are expected to play the singles rubbers on day one and the two Lopez's the doubles match.

The 14-time Grand Slam champion, Nadal, who was out of action for a few months recovering from injury prior to the Australian Open, is expected to return to action again on February 13 in Rotterdam.
