Angelique Kerber overcame a strong challenge from Dominika Cibulkova to win her opening match at the WTA Finals.
Kerber won 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 6-3 against Cibulkova.
Cibulkova seemed to have her opponent rattled as she took the opening stanza however the world number one showed great composure to regroup and then take the next two sets and the match.
Apart from Kerber’s slow start, she seems to be hitting the ball well and will be one of the tournament’s favourites.

“Domi is a tough opponent, I knew that I had to play my best tennis,” said Kerber.
“I was trying to stay positive in the third set, play my game, be aggressive and just go for it. I was also really concentrating on getting my first serve in. It was a really close match.”
Kerber and Simona Halep are at the top the Red Group after both securing victories in their opening fixtures.
The round-robin stage will continue on Monday, when Poland’s defending champion Agnieszka Radwanska plays Russia’s Svetlana Kuznetsova, and Czech Karolina Pliskova takes on Spain’s Garbine Muguruza in the White Group.
Two players from each group will progress to Saturday’s semi-finals.
