Zhang Shuai’s pursuit of the Japan Open title was ended following a 6-3, 6-0 semi-final defeat to Katerina Siniakova.
China’s sixth seed Zhang was overpowered by Siniakova, of the Czech Republic, who converted all seven of her break point opportunities in a clinical display.
Siniakova will now face Christina McHale in the final at the Ariake Colosseum on Sunday, with both players hoping to win their first WTA singles title.
McHale, who entered the tournament as seventh seed, edged out Slovakia’s Jana Cepelova 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 in her semi-final.
The American hit ten aces throughout, and finally secured victory when breaking Cepelova’s serve in the final game.
