Nishikori and Dimitrov advance

Kei Nishikori and Grigor Dimitrov advanced to the second round of the US Open following their respective wins on Tuesday.

The Japanese superstar dropped the third set but would eventually earn a comfortable 6-1, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 win over Benjamin Becker on the hard courts of New York.

The sixth seed – who reached the final in 2014 at Flushing Meadows – needed just 50 minutes to grab a two set lead.

However, the German would battled back in the third set, forcing Nishikori to save double break point in the fifth game. Becker then finally broke serve in the eighth game and served out the set to make it 2-1.

It looked as though the match could be heading for five sets when Becker got the early break in the fourth, but Nishikori broke back twice to seal the win in a touch over two hours.

Nishikori will face Karen Khachanov in the second round after the Russian edged Italian qualifier Thomas Fabbiano 6-3, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 earlier in the day.

Elsewhere, 22 seed Dimitrov eased past Inigo Cervantes in straight sets 6-2, 6-4, 7-6(7) to reach the second round in New York for the third consecutive year.
