Seventh seed Yanina Wickmayer cruised past Lauren Davis 6-4, 6-2 to triumph at the Citi Open on Sunday.
Wickmayer’s victory saw her claim her fifth WTA Tour title and first since winning the Japan Women’s Open in September last year.
The Belgian broke Davis in the third game of the match on her way to taking an early 3-1 lead and continued to pile on the pressure. She extended her lead to 5-2 after breaking the American in the seventh game, but Davis broke back and reduced the deficit to 5-4. Despite Davis’ valiant effort, Wickmayer managed to hold on and clinch the first set.
It was smoother sailing for Wickmayer in the second set as she raced out to a 5-0 lead after breaking David three times. Even though Davis responded by breaking Wickmayer in the sixth game, it was too little too late as the 26-year-old eased her way to victory.
