Dimitrov crashes out of Citi Open

Grigor Dimitrov has failed to make it past the second round of the Citi Open on Tuesday as he suffered a shock 4-6, 4-6 defeat at the hands of Daniel Evans.

The result marks another disappointing performance this season for the 12th-seeded Bulgarian who has failed to make an impact since he reached the final of the Istanbul Open in May.

Briton Evans with either face sixth seed Jack Sock or Lukas Lacko in the third round.

Dimitrov was the only high-profile casualty as fourth seed Benoit Paire cruised past American qualifier Jared Donaldson 6-0, 7-5, while eighth seed Sam Querrey, who stunned world number one Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon, downed Bjorn Fratangelo 6-7 (7), 6-4, 6-4. Eleventh seed Alexandr Dolgopolov defeated Jordan Thompson 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (4).

In first round action, Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka and Chinese Taipei’s Yen-Hsun Lu also triumphed. Nishioka beat Ivan Dodig after his opponent retired while he was leading 6-2, 4-2, while Lu edged Austin Krajicek 6-1, 7-6 (3).
