Sharapova out of Rogers Cup

World number two Maria Sharapova will not feature at the Rogers Cup in Toronto next week due to a right leg strain.

Sharapova's withdrawal from the event was confirmed on the tournament's official Twitter account, with officials confirming Simona Halep will be promoted to second seed.

The 28-year-old Russian has not played since she was beaten 2-6, 4-6 by world number one Serena Williams in the semi-finals of Wimbledon last month.

The Rogers Cup is one piece of silverware that has eluded the five-time grand slam champion, with her best performance coming in 2009 when she was beaten 4-6, 3-6 by Elena Dementieva in the final.
