Halep demolishes Schiavone

Simona Halep made light work of former French Open champ Francesca Schiavone to reach the third round of Wimbledon on Thursday.

The Romanian fifth seed was due in action on Wednesday, but saw her match canceled due to extensive rain delays.

She looked none the worse for wear when she finally took to the court the following day, however, dispatching Schiavone 6-1, 6-1 in just 66 minutes.

Halep was in no mood to hang around, smashing 18 winners, claiming six breaks of serve and dropping just two games in an aggressive and dismissive display.

She moves on to face former Wimbledon semi-finalist Kiki Bertens, who was a 6-4, 6-4 winner over Mona Barthel.

Also advancing was in-form American Madison Keys, the ninth seed, who has yet to lose on grass this season. She overcame a tricky opponent in Belgium's Kirsten Flipkens.

Keys took the first set after securing two breaks to Flipkens' one, but it was the Belgian who claimed the only break of serve in the second set during a marathon seventh game which saw Keys save three break points only to finally relinquish the fourth.

It all came down to the deciding third set, and it was Keys who seized the initiative, snatching two breaks in a row to race to a 5-0 lead.

Flipkens fought back, regaining one of those lost breaks, but it only served to delay the inevitable, as Keys went on to clinch a  6-4, 4-6, 6-3 victory.

Seventh seed Belinda Bencic, meanwhile, was forced to retire hurt from her match with Julia Boserup. She was down 4-6, 0-1 at the time.

Also reaching the third round on Thursday was eighth seed Venus Williams and 12th seed Carla Suarez Navarro.

Williams defeated 20-year-old Greek opponent Maria Sakkari 7-5, 4-6, 6-3, while Suarez Navarro battled back from a set down to overcome Denisa Allertova 3-6, 6-2, 6-1.

Japan's Misaki Doi accounted for one of the day's few upsets, ousting 15th seed Karolina Pliskova 7-6 (7-5), 6-3.
