World number three Roger Federer will face Andy Murray in the semi-finals of the Western & Southern Open after beating Feliciano Lopez 6-3, 6-4 on Friday.
Federer and Lopez, who upset Rafael Nadal in the third round, held serve for the first five games of the first set before Federer took a 4-2 lead when he broke Lopez in the sixth game.
Lopez did not put up much of a fight after that and could only watch as the Swiss maestro clinched the first set 6-3.
The second set started out in similar fashion as Federer and Lopez held serve for the first six games and were tied at 3-3 before Federer edged ahead when he broke Lopez in the seventh game.
Federer extended his lead to 5-3 before Lopez held serve in the ninth game to reduce the deficit. However, he could not reel Federer in and the Swiss converted match point on his first attempt to finish off the Spaniard in just over an hour.
Federer will be in for a tough time of it in the last four when he comes up against Murray, who beat 12th seed Richard Gasquet 4-6, 6-1, 6-4.
The other semi-final will see world number one Novak Djokovic, who beat fifth seed Stan Wawrinka 6-4, 6-1, taking on qualifier Alexandr Dolgopolov after the Ukrainian stunned sixth seed Tomas Berdych 6-4, 6-2.
