Bacsinszky and Ivanovic through in Paris

Top seeds Timea Bacsinszky and Anna Ivanovic both advanced to the third round of Roland Garros on Thursday.

Bacsinszky, seeded eighth, fought off a strong comeback from Eugenie Bouchard to emerge victorious 6-4, 6-4 on Philippe Chatrier Court.

It was Bouchard who started off well, running out to a 3-0 lead. But Bacsinszky brought it back to four games all before closing out the the set.

The wheels looked to have come off for Bouchard in the second set, as a triple break saw her go 5-0 down. However the nuggety Canadian saved a match point and battled back to make it 5-4.

While she had two break points in the final game, it was a bridge too far as Bacsinszky served out the match.

Meanwhile, Ivanovic eased past Kurumi Nara 7-5, 6-1 in a shade under 90 minutes on Court One.

The 2008 Roland Garros champion was made to work hard for the first set, but blitzed through the second in under 30 minutes.

In other results, 12th seed Carla Suarez Navarro defeated Qiang Wang 6-1, 6-3 and Yulia Putintseva upset 28th seed Andrea Petkovic 6-2, 6-2.
