Veteran Karlovic battles through in Paris

Croatian Ivo Karlovic defeated Australian Jordan Thompson in a five-set thriller at Roland Garros to become the oldest player to reach the third round of a grand slam in 25 years.

The big serving 37-year-old Karlovic needed four hours and 34 minutes to beat the 22-year-old Thompson 6-7(2), 6-3 7-6(3), 6-7(4), 12-10.

The 27th seeded Karlovic served 41 aces against the Australian wildcard in the longest match so far in this year’s tournament.

Tennis legend Jimmy Connors was 38-years-old when he reached the third round of the US Open in 1991. The American reached the semi-finals and was beaten by countryman Jim Courier in straight sets.

Karlovic will next be up against second seed Any Murray who defeated Frenchman Mathias Bourgue in a five-set marathon.
