Marin Cilic advanced to the quarter-finals of the US Open following his victory over Jeremy Chardy on Sunday evening.
The defending champion fired 52 winners during his 6-3, 2-6, 7-6(2), 6-1 win over the Frenchmen on the hard courts of Flushing Meadows.
Cilic started strong but lost his way in the second set, as Chardy found some momentum, crushing 11 winners on his way to winning four games in row to take the second set.
The third set was a tense affair as the duo both held serve to force a tiebreaker. But the Croatian turned on the class to take a two sets to one lead.
That tiebreaker win seemed to be the turning point for the ninth seed, as he needed just 31 minutes to close out the fourth and final set and reach his third US Open quarter-final.
Waiting for the reigning champion in the round of 16 is another Frenchman, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who defeated Benoit Paire 6-4, 6-3, 6-4.
