The Italian Open women’s first round match between Americans Venus Williams and Coco Vandeweghe had just started on Monday when the match was surprisingly interrupted.
With the scores at 40-40 in the second game of the match, and with Williams preparing to receive serve, there was a disruption behind her when a ball boy fainted and went down face first onto the clay court surface.
Officials and another ball boy rushed to aid the young man who appeared to wake up again and was then carried off the court to the shade.
The extreme heat in Rome on Monday was more than likely the cause of the young boy’s collapse.
Williams went on to win the match convincingly 6-4, 6-3.
