Novak Djokovic accused Bernard Tomic of lacking commitment after the Australian gave up on the match-point of his clash with Fabio Fognini at the Madrid Masters.
Tomic ‘tanked’ the final point against the Italian by holding his racket upside down and failing to make an attempt to return his opponent’s serve.
And when quizzed on his actions, he made matters worse by replying: “I don’t care about that match point. Would you care if you were 23 and worth over $10 million?”
World number one Djokovic has a close training relationship with Tomic, but pulled no punches in his assessment of the events.
“I’ve seen what he has done. It’s not right and I hope he realises that,” Djokovic told AFP.
“I’m just hoping for him, because over the last couple of years I got to know him better and he’s a good guy, he’s a good person, but he’s just failing to be committed to this sport as it is required.”
