Nadal carrying Spain’s flag at Olympics

Spanish tennis superstar Rafael Nadal will be carrying Spain’s flag at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro on August 5 at the Maracana Stadium.

Nadal took to Twitter to confirm the honour – “I’m really proud to be Spain flag bearer in #Rio2016,” the 29-year-old said.

He also posted a video on his official Twitter page thanking the Spanish Olympic Committee.

“This is a great honour,” said Nadal. “I’m very excited. I hope the games will be great and that the entire Spanish team can do well.”

Nadal won the Olympic tennis gold medal in Beijing in 2008, beating Chile’s Fernando Gonzalez in the final.

Four years ago at the London Olympics Nadal was elected to carry the Spanish flag but was forced to pull out due to injury.
