Williams’ preparations for the French Open continue to be hampered, as she has played in just one clay court event so far this year. The 35-year-old was knocked out in the second round in Charleston by Alison Riske.
The seven-time grand slam winner has featured four times in the Madrid open, with her best result being in 2010 when she lost in the final to France’s Aravane Rezai.
