David Ferrer and Richard Gasquet have been forced to withdraw from the Barcelona Open due to injuries.
The pair travelled to the tournament and even participated in promotional activities, including paying a visit to the Nou Camp Stadium to receive personalised FC Barcelona jerseys, but neither have been able to make it onto a tennis court.
Spaniard Ferrer, who was due to face Radek Stepanek in the first round, fell victim to the same leg injury that kept him out of the Monte Carlo Masters, while Gasquet pulled out of his match with Malek Jaziri with a rib complaint.
The injury represents ongoing concerns for Gasquet. The world number 10 already missed out on the Australian Open due to a back injury and with the French Open just a few weeks away, he’ll be desperate to bank plenty of court time between now and then.
Both players are, however, expected to play in Madrid and Rome before Roland Garros.
Meanwhile, Rafa Nadal and Kei Nishikori are among those who have safely negotiated their way into the second round in Barcelona.
