Gilles Muller beat Aljaz Bedene in the only first-round match played at the Moselle Open in France on Monday.
Muller, meeting Bedene for the first time on the ATP Tour, fired 20 aces on the way to a fairly straightforward 6-3 6-4 victory.
The 32-year-old snatched one break of serve to clinch the first set, and then broke twice more to take a 4-1 lead in the second.
Bedene fought hard in the next game to regain one of those lost breaks, but he could not find another way past Muller's serve.
Players who qualified for the main draw on Monday included Edouard Roger-Vasselin and Kenny De Schepper.
