Williams wins, Wozniacki crashes in China

Venus Williams comfortably beat qualifier Julia Goerges in the second round of the Dongfeng Motor Wuhan Open in China on Tuesday.

The American won in straight sets against her German opponent winning 6-4, 6-3 in one hour, 25 minutes.

Unseeded Slovakian Anna Karolina Schmiedlova caused a big upset when she beat Danish fourth seed Caroline Wozniacki 1-6, 6-4, 7-6(6) in over three hours.

British qualifier Johanna Konta got past Victoria Azarenka of Belarus, when she retired due to injury after losing the first set 6-4 and trailing 1-0 in the second.

In other results, Spanish fifth seed Garbine Muguruza hammered America's Sloane Stephens 6-2, 6-0 while Italian 15th seed Roberta Vinci defeated Romania's Irina-Camelia Begu 6-4, 6-3.

Third seed Petra Kvitova of Czech Republic was made to work hard for her win against Russia's Daria Gavrilova, eventually coming through 6-3, 4-6, 7-5.

Top seed Simona Halep advanced to the third round following her win over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. The Romanian needed just 64 minutes on the hard courts of China to put away her opponent 6-2, 6-1. Halep will face Johanna Konta next.
