Williams surges up WTA rankings

Following her WTA tournament win in Wuhan, Venus Williams has surged up the WTA tennis rankings, climbing 10 places into 14th position.

Williams clinched the tournament title last week after Garbine Murguruza was forced to retire from the final due to exhaustion, with the American up a set and three games.

Despite the defeat, the Wimbledon finalist gained three places in the rankings to climb to a career-high ranking of fifth.

The biggest loser in the rankings published on Monday was Serbia's Ana Ivanovic, who fell six places to 15th.
