Pavlyuchenkova sends Pennetta crashing in China

US Open champion Flavia Pennetta lost in the third round of the China Open to Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova on Thursday.

Russia’s Pavlyuchenkova took three sets to beat the Italian third seed 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 in two hours.

In the first set, the Russian broke serve first but Pennetta broke back and went to a 5-3 lead before holding serve to win the set 6-3.

The second set was close and at 4-4 Pavlyuchenkova broke serve to go on and win the set 6-4.

In the final set the Russian dominated with early breaks to lead 5-2 at one stage and despite an attempted fightback by the Italian, she managed to hold on and win the third set 6-4 and reach the quarter-finals.

In other matches, Spanish fifth seed Garbine Muguruza Blanco took three sets to beat Croatia’s Mirjana Lucic-Baroni 1-6, 6-2, 6-1 and in an upset Bethanie Mattek-Sands of America beat Italian 15th seed Roberta Vinci (Italy) 6-1, 3-6, 6-2.

The final match of the evening saw sixth seed Ana Ivanovic survive a second-set wobble to complete a 7-5 4-6 6-2 victory over Svetlana Kuznetsova.

The first set the players exchange seven breaks of serve, with Ivanovic clinching the set with her fourth break.

Two early breaks against one from Ivanovic saw Kuznetsova take an early lead in the second set, which she held on to level the scores, but Ivanovic finished by far the stronger of two in the final set, claiming two more breaks to seal victory after two hours and 22 minutes.
