Williams marches on at Indian Wells

Top seed Serena Williams beat Kazakhstan’s Yulia Putintseva in the third round of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells on Sunday.

Though the first set was close, Williams beat Putintseva 7-6(2) 6-0 in 77 minutes. In the first set, both players dropped their serves twice before the American won the tiebreak 7-2.

The second was dominated by the world number one as she broke Putinsteva’s serve three times to win the set and match in just 25 minutes.

In other matches, world number three Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland cruised past Monica Niculescu of Romania 6-2, 6-1 and eighth seed Petra Kvitova of Czech Republic outlasted Johanna Larsson of Sweden 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 in two hours and 27 minutes.

Serbian 19th seed Jelena Jankovic hammered American Coco Vandeweghe 6-0, 6-1 and fifth seed Simona Halep of Romania beat Russian 30th seed Ekaterina Makarova 6-2, 6-4 while America’s Nicole Gibbs got past Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan 6-0, 6-4.

Kateryna Bondarenko of Ukraine spent two hours and 47 minutes on court to defeat countryman Lesia Tsurenko 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(7) and Barbora Strycova of Czech Republic beat Japan’s Kurumi Nara Japan 3-6, 6-1, 6-2.
