American second seed Sloane Stephens defeated Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia to win the women’s singles title at the Acapulco International on Saturday.
Stephens had to work hard to get past Cibulkova in three sets winning 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(5) in a match lasting three hours and eight minutes for the 22-year-olds second title of 2016.
In the first set, there were five breaks of serve before the American clinched the set 6-4 after 50 minutes.
Cibulkova came storming back in the second set breaking serve twice to level the match 6-4 and force a decider.
The final set was a thriller; Cibulkova dropped serve in the fifth game but broke back to level things up at 3-3.
After some tight long games with both players having break point opportunities the match went to a tie-break.
Stephens went comfortably up 5-2 and had three opportunities to win the title but Cibulkova saved two of those match points before the second seed was able to win the breaker 7-5 to clinch the title.
