Petkovic scores big win over Muguruza

Andrea Petkovic claimed her first win over a top-five opponent in more than three years on Thursday, beating Garbine Muguruza 6-1, 5-7, 6-2 in the quarter-finals of the Qatar Total Open.

While Muguruza was able to match Petkovic on winners throughout the match, the German produced a much more disciplined performance overall, hitting just 16 unforced errors to her opponent’s 38.

“It’s very special,” Petkovic said of the win. “It was so tough; Garbine is such a talented and dangerous player who put me under pressure. I was a little lucky in the end, but I’m just happy to be through.”

Petkovic felt the result was just rewards for her recent upswing in form.

“I’ve been playing really well the past few weeks. Everything is coming together and I’m getting my match focus again. I’m really happy I’m on the right path and really looking forward to the whole season.”

Petkovic has a good chance of going all the way to the final. She next faces Jelena Ostapenko, after the Latvian teenager defeated China’s Zheng Saisai 6-4, 6-3.

Ostapenko is an exciting young prospect, but inexperienced at this level.

“I watched both of her matches, and she’s been playing great. I had her on the radar, before. I saw her in Linz qualifying and thought this girl is really good,” said Petkovic.

Also through to the last four is Carla Suarez Navarro, the Spaniard getting the better of Russia’s Elina Vesnina in straight sets 6-3, 7-6 (7-3).

Suarez Navarro moves on to face third seed Agnieszka Radwanska, who battled back from a set down to beat Roberta Vinci 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.
