Top-seeded Victoria Azarenka pulled out of the Mexico Open in Acapulco on Wednesday with a left wrist injury.
The 26-year-old’s withdrawal means that Dominika Cibulkova advances into the third round of the tournament.
Azarenka was playing her first event since crashing out of the Australian Open to eventual champion Angelique Kerber.
Wednesday’s withdrawal from the WTA hardcourt tournament was another setback for the two-time grand slam champion who has displayed strong form at the beginning of this year.
After being plagued by injury in 2014, the Belarusian spoke openly about her experience of depression during that period.
The tennis world will hold their breath regarding the assessment of Azarenka’s wrist. The star adds great value to the game when she is she fit and playing but her emotional well being will also be a concern for many if she is staring at more time off the court.
