Kvitova, Bouchard bundled out in Doha

Jelena Ostapenko upset fifth seed Petra Kvitova in the third round of the Qatar Total Open on Wednesday, while Eugenie Bouchard was also beaten by China’s Saisai Zheng.

Kvitova got the better of her opponent in the first set, earning three breaks to Ostapenko’s two, but she fell apart badly from there.

Ostapenko claimed six further breaks in the remaining two sets, staying solid on serve throughout, to complete a dramatic turnaround, eventually winning 5-7, 6-2, 6-1.

The Latvian believes she is a different player since defeating Carla Su├írez Navarro at last year’s Wimbledon.

“It gave me confidence that I can play at that level,” she told the WTA website. “Today, I’m just happy that I could play my best.

Bouchard, meanwhile, was very competitive in her first set against Zhang, which saw each player lose their serve three times, but after going down in a tie-break she capitulated quickly in the second, going down 7-6 (7-1), 6-1.

Also joining the exodus was Caroline Wozniacki, who was beaten 7-5, 5-7, 6-3 by Russia’s Elina Vesnina.

Third seed Agnieszka Radwanska, meanwhile, bucked the trend with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Monica Niculescu, while fourth seed Garbine Muguruza also advanced, defeating Timea Babos 6-2, 7-5.

The aforementioned Suarez Navarro looked in total control as she beat Timea Bacsinszky 6-2, 6-2, while others to move on included Andrea Petkovic and Roberta Vinci.
