Top seed Wawrinka knocked out in Marseille

Tournament top seed Stan Wawrinka came unstuck against Frenchman Benoit Paire in the quarter-finals of the Open 13 in Marseille on Friday.

Spurred on by his home fans, eighth-seeded Paire secured what was only his second victory in eight attempts over Wawrinka – and first in more than two years.

Paire broke early in the first and third sets to complete a 6-4, 1-6, 7-5 victory.

Awaiting Paire next is fourth seed Marin Cilic, who reached his first semi-final of the season with a straightforward 6-3 6-4 win over Andrey Kuznetsov.

Cilic was dominant on his own serve, smashing 10 aces and winning 81 per cent of his service points.

Also impressing on the day was Nick Kyrgios, the young Australian upsetting third seed Richard Gasquet 6-0, 6-4 in under and hour, losing just six points on serve throughout the contest and firing 17 aces.

He goes on to face second seed Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic, who made light work of David Goffin, winning 6-3 6-4 in just 78 minutes.
