Benoit Paire and David Goffin both made successful starts to their Open 13 campaigns in Marseille on Monday.
Eighth seed Paire, one of 10 Frenchmen in the draw this weekend, converting four of 16 break points on the way to a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Simone Bolleli of Italy.
The victory ended a run of four straight first-round defeats for Paire, who moves on to face Nicolas Mahut.
Sixth seed Goffin was up against South Korea’s Hyeon Chung, racing to a 6-3 6-1 victory in 62 minutes to book his place in the second round.
The only other first-round match of the day saw Dutchman Robin Haase beat Portugal’s Joao Sousa 6-4 6-0.
Haase will look to reach his first quarter-final of the season when he takes on fourth seed Marin Cilic in the second round.
