Russia’s Svetlana Kuznetsova and Karolina Pliskova both suffered early exits on the opening day of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships.
Eighth seed Kuznetsova suffered a blowout, going down 6-0 6-1 to Germany’s Julia Georges in just 56 minutes.
Sixth seed Pliskova was more competitive, but capitulated after losing a tightly-contested first set against Caroline Vandeweghe, with the American completing a 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 victory.
Earlier, another American, Madison Brengle, advanced with a 6-4 7-5 victory over Ekaterina Makarova. Brengle moves on to face fourth-seeded Petra Kvitova in the second round.
Also advancing was Andrea Petkovic, 6-2 6-1 over Camila Giorgi, and Kristina Mladenovic, who was a 6-2, 7-6 (7-1) winner over Lesia Tsurenko.
France’s Caroline Garcia was the day’s other winner, beating Anna Karolina Schmiedlova 6-4 6-1.
