Johnson falls in Memphis

Second seed Steve Johnson’s Memphis Open campaign came to an end on Thursday after he was stunned 7-6 (5), 7-6 (7) by Taylor Fritz.

Johnson looked to be cruising in the first set as he took a 4-2 lead after breaking Fritz right off the bat. However, Fritz broke Johnson in the eighth game to make it 4-4 before the set went into a tie-break, which Fritz went on to win.

After breaking each other in the first two games of the second set, Fritz and Johnson gave nothing away off their serve for the remainder of the set. This led to another tie-break being needed to separate the duo, which Fritz won once again.

Fritz will face Benjamin Becker in the quarter-finals after the German downed seventh seed John Millman 6-2, 7-6 (6).

Meanwhile, third seed Donald Young beat Marcel Granollers 6-1, 7-6 (2) and will go up against Richard Berankis in the last eight after the latter defeated eighth seed Damir Dzumhur 6-3, 6-4.
