Monfils crashes in Montpellier

Frenchman Edouard Roger-Vasselin defeated countryman and fifth seed Gael Monfils to reach the second round of the Montpellier International on Wednesday.

Roger-Vasselin beat the two-time defending champion 6-4, 7-6(5) in a match lasting 96 minutes. This was his first win against Monfils, he faces Australian John Millman next.

In other matches, eighth-seeded Marcos Baghdatis reached the quarter-finals by beating Taro Daniel of Japan 6-2, 7-6(7). The Cypriot will next be up against French top seed Richard Gasquet.

Gasquet was a comfortable 6-4, 6-4 winner against Ernests Gulbis of Latvia.

Germany’s Michael Berrer had few problems defeating Kenny De Schepper of France 6-3, 6-4 in 80 minutes.

Berrer will face Alexander Zverev in the quarter-finals after he defeated second seed Marin Cilic 7-6 (4), 7-6 (1).
