Garbine Muguruza started her WTA Finals campaign with a win against Lucie Safarova in Singapore on Monday.
The Spaniard won in straight sets in the opening round robin match against her Czech opponent, going through 6-3, 7-6 (4) in just under two hours.
Muguruza started well to break and go into a 3-1 lead to dominate the set and eventually win 6-3.
The second set was a much closer affair and the match proceeded to a tie-breaker after the scores were tied at 6-6.
The Spaniard went into the changeover at 4-2 up after a mini-break then Safarova broke back, but that scarcely halted Muguruza’s charge as she went on to win the breaker 7-4 and the match.
The other two players in the group are Petra Kvitova and Angelique Kerber who play later on Monday.
