Angelique Kerber is certainly enjoying herself, and for good reason, having claimed her maiden grand slam title on Saturday.
On Sunday, the German was attending the traditional trophy photo shoot the day after the Australian Open final when she decided to follow in the footsteps of two-time Australian Open champion Jim Courier.
On winning the year’s first grand slam in 1992 and 1993, Courier had a swim in Melbourne’s Yarra River which flows close to Melbourne Park.
Kerber, the new world number two, and one of her coaches decided to take a dip on what on Sunday, although she wasn’t quite as committed as Courier.
While the Yarra is a popular spot for boating and fishing, the murky waters are not often visited by swimmers. In fact, Courier is believed to have picked up a stomach bug after his second swim.
This was perhaps the reason behind Kerber’s restraint…
Kerber’s river jump was borne out of a bet. She walked along the Yarra almost daily. Told me she was careful to keep her head above water.
