Federer sublime on home soil

World number three Roger Federer was in irresistible form as he began his quest for a seventh Swiss Indoors Basel title on Tuesday.

The former world number one raced to a straight-sets victory against Mikhail Kukushkin, winning 6-1, 6-2 in just 55 minutes to book a place in round two.

Federer scored consecutive wins in the first five games of the first set and then closed out his 54th match victory of 2015 with back-to-back wins in the final four games of the second set.

Up next for the Swiss master is Germany’s Philipp Kohlschreiber, who advanced to round two with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 win over Jerzy Janowicz earlier in the day.

Meanwhile, Grigor Dimitrov will face a resurgent Rafael Nadal in round two after a he secured a straight-sets win over Sergiy Stakhovsky.

Dimitrov won 6-3, 6-4 and needed just 70 minutes to do so. He will hope to record a first ever win against Nadal, after succumbing to defeat in their six previous encounters.

David Goffin, the eighth seed, needed 121 minutes to see his way past Italy’s Andreas Seppi. The Belgian won 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, and will face Frenchman Adrian Mannarino in round two.
