Australia’s Daria Gavrilova was beaten in the fourth round by Spanish 10th seed Carla Suarez Navarro to end her dream run at the Australian Open on Sunday night.
The tenth seed, who was nursing a knee injury, came through in three sets against the Russian-born emerging star winning 0-6, 6-3, 6-2 in 123 minutes.
Gavrilova dominated the first set breaking her opponent’s serve in the second, fourth and sixth games to take the set 6-0 in 26 minutes.
In the second set, Suarez Navarro got back in the match breaking Gavrilova’s serve in the fifth and ninth games to take the set 6-3.
The Australian started the third where she left off in the first set to lead 2-0.
Gavrilova then seemed to lose focus and dropped her serve in the fourth game and then again in the sixth and eighth games for Suarez Navarro to win the set and match 6-2.
Suarez Navarro next faces Poland’s Agnieszka Radwanska in the quarter-finals.
“I tried to fight every ball, every point,” Suarez Navarro said afterwards.
“It’s difficult when you start like this, on this court, with this crowd, against a local player, but it was just belief.
“I feel pain a little bit (in my right knee), but it’s part of the game … I’m happy, because I fight until the last point.”
