Williams steams past Gasparyan

Serena Williams is nothing if not efficient. The world number one needed just 55 minutes to down Margarita Gasparyan in the fourth round of the Australian Open 6-2, 6-1.

Despite looking somewhat sluggish on court in the first set, Williams broke Gasparyan three times in the opening set and twice in the second to set up a quarter-final date with Maria Sharapova

Gasparyan had her moments, but the Russian’s desire to beat Williams to grabbing the winner saw her come up short on too many occasions, coughing up 44 unforced errors and registering just nine winners.

As the world number 58 discovered, the margin for error is so small against Williams, and at times the top seed was ruthless in disposing of Gasparyan.

The match seemed to be over in the blink of an eye, and the message was clear: even when not at her best, Williams will be hard to beat.
