Zhang continues dream run

Shuai Zhang continued her remarkable run at the Australian on Saturday when she beat Varvara Lepchenko in straight sets to book her place in the last 16.

The Chinese player, who beat world number to Simona Halep in the first round, recorded a 6-1, 6-3 victory over her American opponent in the third round and will take on 15th seed Madison Keys for a spot in the quarter-finals.

Zhang raced through the first set in only 28 minutes after winning six games on the trot, having lost her serve in the opening game.

Two more breaks of the Lepchenko serve followed at the start of the second set, but Zhang was pegged back somewhat when she lost a service game of her own in the eighth game when serving for the match.

However, Lepchenko’s resurgence was short-lived as Zhang broke once again in the following game to advance to the fourth round.
