Murguruza crashes out in third round

Garbine Muguruza has crashed out of the Australian Open after a surprise 6-3, 6-2 defeat to Barbora Strycova.

The third seed had been one of the tournament’s most impressive performers in the opening two rounds and was highly fancied to mount a serious challenge for the title.

However, the unseeded Czech was able to take full advantage of an uncharacteristically error-strewn performance from Muguruza to pull off one of the shocks of the competition.

It seemed to go wrong for Muguruza right from the start, as Strycova eased into a 2-0 lead in the first set.

The Spaniard attempted to power her way back into the set, but never really managed to get going and surrendered the first set with a meek shot to the net.

The second set mirrored the first, with the lacklustre Muguruza again falling into a 2-0 deficit and failing to muster the quality to turn it around.

Strycova, who is ranked at number 48 in the world, will now face either No.14 seed Victoria Azarenka or unseeded Japanese Naomi Osaka in the fourth round.
