Williams powers past Russian teen

Serena Williams lost only three points on serve as the top seed beat Russian teen Daria Kasatkina in straight sets in their Australian Open third round match on Friday.

Two of the points the defending champion lost on serve came in the very first game of the match, but ultimately the 18-year-old had no answer to her illustrious opponent’s power game, going down 6-1, 6-1 inside 47 minutes.

The world number one raced to 3-0 lead and even though Kasatkina was able to get on the scoreboard in the next game, the hold of serve that followed did nothing to halt the American’s progress.

The second set followed much the same pattern, although this time around Williams didn’t lose a single point on serve.

A break of serve in the first game of the second stanza gave Williams the lead immediately, and whilst her young opponent was able to avoid the bagel with a hold at her next attempt, there was no stopping the top seed.

Williams will take on Margarita Gasparyan, another Russian, for a spot in the quarter-finals.
