Russia’s Svetlana Kuznetsova hammered Monica Puig to win the Sydney International final on Friday night.
The unseeded Kuznetsova defeated Puig of Puerto Rica 6-0, 6-2 in 56 minutes after defeating world number two Simona Halep earlier in the day, after a backlog due to rain, in their semi-final match, winning 7-6(5), 4-6, 6-3.
Kuznetsova broke Puig’s serve five times in a dominant display that will see her head into the Australian Open full of confidence ahead of her first round match against Daniela Hantuchova.
Puig was overwhelmed by her more experienced rival and had no answer for her aggressive game.
She lost her serve in the second, fourth and sixth games of the first set and was broken twice more in the second set.
