The Dubai leg of the International Premier Tennis League (IPTL) came to a close on Wednesday with a 26-22 victory for the UAE Royals over the Japan Warriors.
The Warriors fell to their ninth defeat in 10 matches, with Marin Cilic playing an instrumental role for the Royals.
Marat Safin gave the Warriors a winning start when he beat Goran Ivanisevic 6-3 in the legends singles match, although Cilic hit back for the Royals with a 6-3 victory over Phillip Kohlschreiber in the men's singles before teaming up with Daniel Nestor to complete a narrow 6-5 (7-2) win over Leander Paes and Pierre-Hugues Herbert in the men's doubles.
It was still a very tight game at that point, but Kristina Mladenovic would hand the Royals a five-point lead by beating Kirsten Flipkens 6-2, effectively sealing the victory for her side.
Flipkens and Herbert were able to beat Mladenovic and Nestor 6-5 (7-3) in the concluding mixed doubles match, but it was a comfortable win for the Royals in the end.
