Venus Williams and Ana Ivanovic crashed out of the ASB Classic on Tuesday, whilst Caroline Wozniacki battled past Danka Kovinic.
Williams clashed with Daria Kasatkina at the ASB Classic in Auckland on Tuesday. After being forced to fight hard to claim the first set 7-6, Williams struggled for rhythm and ended up losing the match 6-7, 6-3, 6-3. Russia's Kasatkina is only 18 years of age and looks to have a bright future ahead of her.
Britain's Naomi Broady pulled off the biggest victory of her career as she ended Ivanovic's tournament. Ranked 122 in the world, qualifier Broady beat the former French Open champion 7-5, 6-4 in an hour and 22 minutes for a maiden victory over a top-20 player.
Caroline Wozniacki, one of the ASB Classic's biggest names, endured a few early scares before progressing to the second round of Auckland's showpiece event by beating Kovinic 6-4, 6-4.
Elsewhere there were straight set wins for Marina Erakovic, Barbora Strycova, Julia Gorges and Christina McHale. Tamira Paszek needed all three sets to dispose of Italy's Francesca Schiavone.
Kirsten Flipkens beat Bethanie Mattek-Sands 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.
