Stosur bites the dust

Australia number one Sam Stosur was eliminated from the Brisbane International on Tuesday, after three bruising sets against Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro.

Navarro, seeded sixth for this tournament, finished the job in two hours, beating the Australian 6-1, (3) 6-7, 6-4. The Spaniard advance to the quarter-final of the tournament without dropping a single service game in either of the two sets that she won.

During the first set Stosur was under the cosh from the outset and simply wasn’t able to gather any meaningful momentum, while she carried herself with distinction in the decider, where the only blemish was the break conceded in the third game.

Incidentally, there wasn’t much actually separating the players in the second set either, where Stosur showed considerable character after going 3-0 early on. She won the break back and subsequently produced a flawless tie break.

However, she was not able to sustain that performance in the decider, while Navarro continued to show tremendous composure in testing circumstances. In other results on Tuesday, Ekaterina Makarova beat Margarita Gasparyan 6-2, 2-6, 6-3. Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova beat Alize Cornet 6-2, 1-6, 6-4. Roberta Vinci crushed an unsuspecting Dominika Cibulkova 6-1, 6-1.
