Peel joins Saracens coaching team

England U20 head coach Ian Peel is to join the Saracens coaching team and will also assist the England senior team as scrum coach in 2016.

Peel will leave his position as an international performance coach with the RFU and England U20 head coach but will play a part-time role as scrum coach in Eddie Jones' coaching team for the Six Nations.

The 39-year-old has been involved in the England U20 programme since 2013, firstly as an assistant coach, winning back-to-back Junior World Championship titles in 2013 and 2014 as well as reaching the final last year.

The age-group squad also won the U20 Six Nations title in 2015 and were runners up in 2014, narrowly missing out on the Grand Slam to France.

As a player Peel started as a junior at Wharfedale RUFC and went on to sign for the Falcons in 1998, going on to make 122 Premiership appearances as a prop before retiring in 2006.

Peel began coaching with Newcastle's Academy, combining his role with the Falcons alongside being forwards coach at National One side Tynedale. He also had coaching stints at renowned rugby schools Sedbergh and Barnard Castle.

He forged a partnership with John Fletcher and Pete Walton at Newcastle, coaching the scrum before he joined the RFU as a National Academy Coach scrum specialist looking after the Sevens, U18s and U20s.

"Every team I have worked with has been different but I have massively enjoyed my time with all of them and for different reasons," said Peel.

"Not just the success that went with the Under-20s with the Junior World Championships but seeing players that have developed through the pathway then go on and play in the Premiership or Championship and then ultimately going on and represent England or the British and Irish Lions. That is the biggest honour."

On the chance to work with the England senior team as scrum coach, he added: "This is a huge opportunity and I am really looking forward to getting stuck in with lots of the guys who I have worked with through the age-group teams but also when I have gone in and helped Graham Rowntree over the last few seasons.

"It is a huge honour to go and deliver that for the seniors and joining up with Eddie, Steve Borthwick, Paul Gustard and the rest of the team."
