Kenya’s Vivian Cheruiyot clinched the gold medal in the women’s 5000m event at the Olympics on Friday with an Olympic record time of 14:26.17.
Cheruiyot, who is one of Kenya’s greatest athletes, stunned favourite Almaz Ayana of Ethiopia to take home her first-ever gold medal at the Olympics.
Ayana, who broke the world record in the 10,000m event, had opened up a big gap with two laps to go, but Cheruiyot timed her surprise attack to precision and never looked back from that point on.
There was more disappointment for Ayana as she was then surpassed by Kenya’s Hellen Obiri, who finished with a personal best time of 14:29.77.
Ayana had to settle for third as she clocked a time of 14:33.59.
